Welcome to the Hickstionary, a landing spot for all things H family.
I'm Heidi. He's Rusty. And together we have our beautiful babe, Beckett and a furry menace, Dakota.
I mostly use this space to brag about how awesome the kid is, whine about how naughty the dog is & share an occasional deep thought.
Thanks for hanging out with us as we figure out this [blessed] life!

ISU vs OSU

We've always said B was good luck for the Cyclones. Just five days after he was born, the Cyclones upset the Cowboys, rocking the BCS (and causing a lot of heartache for my sweet cousin and her family). So it only would make sense that the Cyclones would invite him to their next home game against OSU. He got the VIP treatment and Rusty & I got to tag along.

(Or something like that.) ;)

We started the morning by catching the tail end of the spirit walk then heading inside to visit the new football building. B and Rusty watched the football guys work out (or whatever it is football guys do before a game) and I watched B take it all in. He kept whispering 'WOW' at everything he saw. He thought it was pretty awesome. (We did too.) I posted a couple of my favorite shots of him taking in the sites a little earlier. Next, our hostess with the mostess, Miss Meagan, took us into Jacobson to give us the lay of the land. The recruits were meeting but all B noticed was that they had food. He yelled, "LUNCH" and made a beeline for their door. I was pretty sure he couldn't sneak in as a recruit just yet so we grabbed him and snuck out. (He was super pleased when he did get to go in there later and he gladly did his part to finish off the cookies they left behind.) Before kickoff, we headed out to brave the cold and visit some of R's family. His sister and cousins were there with their kids (all except for Brenny P) and we got a group shot. My kid is the one in front pouting because he couldn't sit up on the wall like the big kids.

Amazingly, as cold as it was for tailgating, it was pretty warm in the stands (and out of the wind). B kept himself entertained by playing with all the toys and the iPad that was tucked into the bag for all of about 10 minutes. He then was super entertained by Miss Meagan for another 10 minutes. All in all, I was impressed we lasted in the stands as long as we did but we headed inside during the 2nd quarter.

He quickly decided his favorite spot to 'watch the game' from was right in front of the windows, oblivious to the game going on but totally tuned in to wherever Cy was at all times. (I love his super excited face he got every time he told me Cy was near.) He was also super impressed with the band (who thankfully started playing as soon as we attempted that family shot below- it looks like he's smiling and posing but he was really just orchestrating the music). Each time a band member would make their way inside to the restroom he wanted to pat them on the back and tell them Cy was back there. He made a lot of college friends today. ;) Other highlights of being inside for B included running around wherever he wanted while the security people all told him how cute he was and eating all the cookies and donuts he could sneak off the table before his mom caught him.

After the game (okay, actually a little before the game was technically over... sorry Cyclones), we ran back into the football building and B ran around on the outdoor practice field long enough to wear him out for his four hour nap he took when we got home. :)

We had the best day and can't thank the Burnham's enough for the fun time! Miss Meagan, you are the best hostess (and also B's new best friend!). Go State!!

Happy

Recently (actually not so recently....more like a few months ago maybe?), we were at a marriage summit. It was just a few hours (or so) long but (in my opinion) even better than other (weekend long) marriage conferences we had been too. R agreed. But that's not the point of this post.

At the summit, they (more than one speaker) shared a quote from a book (which I need to google) that stuck with me.

It was something along the lines of

'What if God's purpose of marriage wasn't to make you happy but to make you holy?'

I was totally convicted. Because I totally expect(ed) marriage to do that (the happy part).

R lucked out because it got him off the hook on a whole lot of stuff

but it also got me to thinking about other areas of life as well.

My relationships with others (family, friends, colleagues).

My work.

My daily routines.

How I spend my time.

Just life in general.

Maybe this pursuit of happyness (spelling error intended) should really be a pursuit of holiness.

And maybe I should stop looking to other things to fulfill me (marriage, parenting, work, friends, family, fun)

 and just let Him.

(Just something I've been thinking about.)

Crib Sheets and other blessings

Hey, Jesus.

Thanks for showing up again. Thanks for always, always, always providing for us when we need You.

This week as I was thinking about some things we needed and knew they wouldn't fit into the budget this month, I asked You for them.

The very next day, the doorbell rang during nap time. I was so frustrated. B had just gone down for his nap and Dakota went psyco at the sound of the bell, waking B up. I was frustrated but when I got to the door I saw You standing there. We'll it wasn't really You but it might as well of been. At the door was someone I barely know. But she and her young son stood there with a bag full of hand me downs for B.

Among other treasures in the bag were the exact things I had asked You for the day before.

I know they were just old crib sheets to her but to me they were a gift straight from You. A reminder of Your blessings and provision for us. A reminder that You've got this when I don't.

Lord, thank You for that. Thank You for having this. Thank You for all the blessings You generously pour out on us. Sometimes they don't show up in little packages with bows on them. Sometimes they show up as a ringing doorbell during nap time. But You are always so, so good.

Thanks for that. Amen.

Here's a peek at what you'll find and also a video. Because its awesome.

cheeeeeeze

I didn't teach it to him. I have no idea how he learned it. I'd really prefer he not do it.

But the kid says cheese.

It does cause him to pause for a nanosecond though so maybe it's not all that bad.

And if you follow me on instagram, you know this is his good smile for pictures. :)

Big thanks to my PATIENT friend Jen for capturing some shots of my little family!

If I ever get caught up on work around here, I'll share more. :)
