Welcome to the Hickstionary, a landing spot for all things H family.
I'm Heidi. He's Rusty. And together we have our beautiful babe, Beckett and a furry menace, Dakota.
I mostly use this space to brag about how awesome the kid is, whine about how naughty the dog is & share an occasional deep thought.
Thanks for hanging out with us as we figure out this [blessed] life!

If you are looking for my photography blog (where words don't tend to fall out of my mouth nearly as freely), visit {captured by} heidi.

TTMT | A Day in the Life

A day in the life. What's it like being you for a day? Try to take some pictures on the hour if you can. I did something similar with the 10 on 10 in March.

A typical day around here:
5:55 am: Wake up to pee. Again.
6:17 am: Finally turn off the alarm and roll out of bed. Assess the hair. If it's not too greasy, throw it up so it doesn't get wet in the shower and figure out some sort of braid thing to put it in to save myself from washing and drying it.
7:03 am: Grab something to eat and try to get out the door in the next 7 minutes.
7:30ish am: Show up at work in time to check email and figure out what's going on for the day.
8:00 am: Pretend to be a morning person as the 1st period students roll in. Whoever said being a teacher isn't that much different from being an actor on stage all day wasn't too far off.
9:58 am: Hang out with the homeroomers. Offer shoulders to cry on and kleenex as needed. Receive some of the best presents and hugs and love anyone could get. (They've even thrown parties for me. For me! I really love this part of my day. Most days.)
10:14 am: Snack. On anything in the fridge. (Which is right in my room- just a little perk of being the FCS teacher.)
10:53 am: More students. More class.
12:48 pm: Lunch time. Finally. Eating lunch (lovingly packed by R) at the desk while students come in to get caught up on work, finish labs, cry about life, or find something to eat because they forgot their lunch. Again. Duty free lunch is a novelty I rarely get but sometimes I just tell them my room is closed for lunch for the day. They usually get it.
1:15 pm: More class. Then study hall.
2:50 pm: Hand out snacks/groceries (isn't that a nice way of saying pawning off the healthy food R sent to school with me and cleaning out my fridge?).
3:15 pm: (I mean 3:20- Is it bad I've had this job for 5 years and just found out this week our contract time is to 3:20 instead of 3:15.... oops) Head out the door when possible.
That last one was a joke. Typically at 3:15 there are still students working (sewing) or there for after school club. Tuesdays/Thursdays club goes until at least 4. Wednesdays meetings are scheduled till 4:30. So somewhere after that I put the day away and get set up for the next day before heading home.
4:44 pm: Snack. On anything on the fridge (at home this time). Check mail. Take dog out (if R isn't home yet). Check in with R. Change clothes. Check email. Try to reply before realizing there are still 60+ new emails. Give up on email and get set up for the client about to show up at the door.
6:00 pm: Photo session.
7:45 pm: Dinner with R. (These days it's been made by R. Isn't he good?)
8:45 pm: Editing until I can't edit anymore.
10:30ish pm: Get ready for the next day and ready for bed to try to sleep before doing it all again.

Between teaching, after school club, cooking classes, {captured by} heidi, and Iowa State teacher ed I feel like I've spent the last couple years working non-stop. A pretty typical day in the life around here lately would be a 15+ hour work day. I miss my friends. And I really miss R. Soooooo..... even though I'm a little (or a lot, surprisingly) sad that today is the last day of school, I'm excited for summer vacation and I'm excited for the leave of absence that next school year brings for me to spend more time focusing on life around here. I will, without a doubt, miss my 8th graders and the teachers I've worked with at AMS but I know God has big plans for us this coming year and I'm excited to be doing something different for awhile.

And after all that I feel like there should be a disclaimer on this 'day in the life' that reflects my 'new' typical day (which will start next week!) which includes a little more sleeping in time, a lot more R time, and definitely some friend and family time. I can't wait! :) (Oh wait.... but that also means more housework, cooking, and grocery shopping time. Guess I'll take it!) ; )

So tell all! What's it like being you for a day!?!?

Talk To Me: What is it Like Living with Your Man?

So I was inspired by Kelsey's post last week about what it's like living with Eric and wondered what you guys had to say about the subject. So do share, what is it like living with your man????

Link up in the comments below or email me your link and I'll add you here:

Kelsey's answers

Living with Rusty.......

you never get bored with the TV because you never get a chance to watch TV (unless you like watching ESPN).

you generally have green grass. or a man complaining about grass that is not green.

you get fed. He is awesome at manning the grill and recently has even taken on some recipes I've asked him to try. I try hard not to treat him like an 8th grader in the kitchen and honestly, he's getting way better than those guys. :)

you don't get to sleep in. If you try to, he'll make the bed right over top of you. Unless he's feeling guilty about having the boys over too late the night before in which case he may bring you breakfast in bed.

you are loved unconditionally. He is one loyal man. Kind of like a dog. Only not.

(Yes.... I realize it's the end of Tuesday.... I started this post last week when I was thinking about it and thought I would have time to actually type something and add a photo or two. No such luck of my schedule allowing for that but summer is just around the corner so maybe I'll finally get caught up around here. Or not.)

PS- He'd want me to add that you laugh. Because he's funny. ;)

A day in the life. What's it like being you for a day? Try to take some pictures on the hour if you can. I did something similar with the 10 on 10 in March. It was so fun (but probably because it was a fun day.... not every day is that exciting around here!) :)

Get Ready...

There's a lot of us (okay, only two of us that I know of) that miss Talk To Me Tuesday. So get ready for Tuesday because a new one is (finally) coming.

What is it like to live with your man?

I saw Kelsey's version of this and thought it was too good to pass up. So let's all be copycats and do one! : )

(Oh come on, I didn't copy/paste Mary's WHOLE post yesterday and I promise I wont copy/post Kelsey's whole post on Tuesday. Really. I promise.)

Blogging funk....

Is it possible to just copy/paste a friend's blog post? My friend Mary posted about her blogging funk and I really could have copy/pasted most of the post and pulled it off as my own:

Friends, I cannot think of anything to blog about these days. Well, no, I take that back. I think of many things to blog about and then think ... that's better left for my personal journal.

I completely feel the same way right now. I have lots going on in my mind but then I wonder how much of it is blog appropriate and how much I want to share. My life has been so completely intertwined with so many other people's stories lately that I wonder what is fair for me to share as my story and what is not. So I jot down memories and think my personal journal is a safer place for now.

Mary also blogged about Women of Faith (where I got to see her and was SO excited!). I was also so excited about hearing Angie Smith speak. Hers is one of the very first blogs I started reading. I remember when her sweet Audrey girl was born. I have always admired Angie's faith, even especially on that day. I remember the interview Pete Wilson did with Angie and her husband Todd and I was just blown away. I've considered myself a 'Sunday' ever since.
I went to Women of Faith with Jen and her mom and had a great time with them. I'm blessed to have such awesome women in my life! (You included because I'm sure if you read the Hickstionary you are 1.) awesome and 2.) not a man..... )

Anyway, thanks for letting me continue to use my blog as my random thoughts piling point. :)

:

A colon???

So my English teacher friend posted this little quiz. I took it and got colon. Nobody wants to be a colon, right? So I tried it again and got colon again. On the third time I got semi-colon which wasn't much better. I was kind of hoping for an exclamation point! but expecting a comma, not that I know what either of those would say about my personality. ;)

The colon:

You Are a Colon

You are very orderly and fact driven.
You aren't concerned much with theories or dreams... only what's true or untrue.

You are brilliant and incredibly learned. Anything you know is well researched.
You like to make lists and sort through things step by step. You aren't subject to whim or emotions.

Your friends see you as a constant source of knowledge and advice.
(But they are a little sick of you being right all of the time!)

You excel in: Leadership positions

You get along best with: The Semi-Colon

and the semi-colon;

You Are a Semi-Colon

You are elegant, understated, and subtle in your communication.
You're very smart (and you know it), but you don't often showcase your brilliance.

Instead, you carefully construct your arguments, ideas, and theories – until they are bulletproof.
You see your words as an expression of yourself, and you are careful not to waste them.

You friends see you as enlightened, logical, and shrewd.
(But what you're saying often goes right over their heads.)

You excel in: The Arts

You get along best with: The Colon

Graduation

There's been a lot going on around here and I have totally, completely been ignoring the blog. (Sorry for the few of you that still check it daily!!) I have lots of catching up to do on here but I figured if I could post a couple events at a time, I might get there.

Here's R's beautiful sister, Mal. She graduated from ISU last week (two weeks ago? how long ago was that? the days have been blending into one another around here!).

We attended her ceremony at Iowa State (woo hoo!) and went out to eat with her and her boyfriend Shawn (on the right) that night. Saturday was her graduation and going away party. The next Monday she moved to Arizona. :( We are so excited for her and know God has big things planned for her as she takes on the world but we were so sad to see her move. (But this does give us an excuse to visit AZ more so we'll get to see Christa more!) :)

Here we are with R's sisters and Shawn. My sister already informed me that I look sickly in the photo so you don't have to check on me to make sure I'm okay. (I am!) It was a busy weekend and the migraine I had all weekend wasn't compatible with our calendar. (Which is a whole other story.... Kari could give you details on how that works for me when I'm riding in a car during an episode but I'd rather we pass on that... ha)

Anyway... can you tell I don't think in blog post thinking anymore? My thoughts are randomly jumbled, just like this update. What? You can blog without your thoughts being blog post style? Hmmm. I didn't know it was possible.

Hope you are all doing well!

Hi.... HEIdi

I'm not sure this will work but hopefully if you click the link it will take you to my friends' little boy talking. The little boy isn't even two yet and he is already quite the little talker. And I LOVE the way he says my name. Makes me giggle every time. This message from him today just made my day. Thanks, buddy! :)
