RAK #29

We are getting so close to RAK #30... yikes! This week's random act:

RAK#29: Stick a dollar near the dollar spot toys for a child to find.
I thought we already did this one but it's still on the list so maybe not... and even if we did, it's a fun one I'm sure will be appreciated by another child. Stick a note to the dollar letting them know it's a special treat for them and if you're extra sneaky, you can 'shop' in the next section over while a child comes to get the dollar. It's fun to see their reaction.

RAK #28

We are getting so close to RAK #30... yikes! This week's random act:

RAK#28: Pay a bill (or give money towards a bill) for someone.
Nobody likes bills! Once upon a time we had a friend who was cutting costs so we added them to our phone line and paid their cell phone bill for awhile. It was fun to serve them in that way until they went back to work. Maybe you know someone that's skimping on the AC to save on the cooling bill or someone who could use help with another bill. I've even had friends/family members of clients that have contacted me asking if they can pay the photography bill for a client- how fun is that?
Help someone out this month and leave them some cash or master card gift card that they can use towards a bill. Stick it in a card letting them know what it's for and why. It can be for someone you know, someone you just met, or a complete stranger. I'm sure they would appreciate it!

RAK #26/27

I'm going to cheat again and put two in one week so I'm covered for this week's too. :)

This week's random acts:

RAK#26: Donate items to the church nursery.
Last time we worked in the nursery, I noticed they could use some new items. I'm sure your church nursery would take donations too. Toys, books, and bubbles! are always fun. Cleaning supplies, paper towels, napkins are always practical. If you're not sure what they could use, ask and I'm sure they'll have ideas for you!

RAK#27: Make a meal for a neighbor.
I thought this was already one but maybe not? So if you've done this recently, choose a new neighbor and make a meal for them. Maybe someone you don't know well (or haven't even met). We are spoiled with great and friendly neighbors. They feed us way more than we feed them so we have some major catching up to do on this RAK.

RAK 23-25

So.... I may have gotten a LITTLE behind on posting to the blog.
I have a lot of really great excuses and most of them end with how much I love summer. Let me try to get caught up first then maybe I'll share some of those awesome excuses with you. In the meantime, you can follow me on instagram at @heididh33 to see what all we've been loving this summer. Also, that's how I'm following what all of you are up to as well. I hate to admit this but it's been a LONG time since I've been caught up on reading all my favorite blogs. If you've blogged awesome goodness lately, please let me know. :)
On to the RAK!

Okay I'm 'cheating' a bit this time. I went to our 'still to come' list and hand-picked ones I've actually done these last few weeks. I noticed we are down to just a few left on the list so if you have some ideas PLEASE let me know! Would love to use yours. :)

This week's (and some catch up...) random acts:

RAK#23: Help a friend clean.
Because who doesn't love this? I've had friends come help me clean and I've helped friends. Cleaning (especially deep cleaning) is so much easier (and dare I say more 'fun') if you have a buddy. I've done some of this lately and absolutely love it. Well. As much as you can love cleaning. ;)

RAK#24: Use your spiritual gifts to bless someone.
What talents has God blessed you with? Are you creative? Good with kids? A great listener? Great in the kitchen? Think about your God given talents and come up with ways to use them to serve others.

RAK#25: Smile at (and say hello to) strangers.
I heard somewhere that most smiles start from another smile.
I pretty much share mine with 'strangers' all the time because I'm from a small town where if you don't say 'hi' to someone that 'knows' you (whether you know them or not), they think you are stuck up. So I just do this to cover my bases in case I see someone I should know. It's interesting to me though to see some people's reaction to this. I especially love greeting the elderly. Bonus points if you ask, "How are you?" then actually stay to hear their answer.

RAK #22

Last week's RAK was to feed someone.

How did you do??

This week's random act:

RAK#22: Do something nice for the dad(s) in your life.

It's Father's Day weekend so let's do something nice for the dads in our lives. I was going to eat a bowl of cereal this morning but realized it was the last of the box and that's R's favorite part so I saved it for him. Does that count. ;)

Where are some ideas you have for this week's? Hopefully you have some better ideas than me this week. :)

RAK #21

Last week's RAK was to babysit for someone. I asked several people if I could babysit for them and no one has taken me up on it yet. I promise I'm a pretty good babysitter if you need someone to watch your kids. :) For real. Bring them by!!

How did you do??

This week's random act:

RAK#20: Feed someone.

Recently we had overspent our food budget for the week and we were out of fruit. We eat a lot of fruit and being out of it early in the week with no food budget left for a few days was a major bummer. My MIL (who had no idea we were out of fruit and have overspent our food budget for the week) brought us a bunch of fresh fruit. It was so awesome and just what we needed. Obviously we weren't starving and we would have survived the week without fresh fruit but it was just such a blessing at the time. This week's RAK is to bless someone with some groceries. In the past, we've gotten a shopping list through church and filled a bag that the church then donates to a food pantry. I was thinking about how I needed to get online and get that shopping list so I could share it with you for this week's RAK and wouldn't you know it..... guess what we got at church this week..... a grocery bag with a shopping list. :)
So this week, fill up a shopping bag with food and feed someone who could use the groceries. It doesn't have to be someone living in poverty for it to be a blessing to them. I'm sure there are people down the street you live on that could be blessed by a bag of groceries this week. If you have a specific family in mind, consider packing a bag of groceries you know they'd love.
If you are packing for a random family, here's the grocery list of suggested non-perishable items: 2 cans of meat (chicken or tuna), 1 jar of peanut butter, 1 box or bag of rice, pasta, or ramen noodles, 2 cans of fruit, 1 box of cereal, 2 cans of vegetables, 2 boxes of mac n cheese, 1 box of saltines, 1 personal hygiene product (shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste/brush, toilet paper).
If you don't know of someone to drop it off with, take it to your local food pantry or find an apartment building and just drop it by the front door. Leave a note for them letting you know it's for them (you can write this is for you, YES YOU! if it's for a stranger).
I'm sure someone will love finding this blessing this week!

RAK #20

Two thirds of the way there!

Last week's RAK was to let someone know you appreciate them. I stuck a couple notes in the mail.

How did you do??

This week's random act:

RAK#20: Offer to babysit for someone.

I remember when B was tiny and people knew I didn't feel comfortable leaving him with a sitter. It made my day (week month!) when family/close friends offered to watch him. Do you know someone that you could offer free babysitting services for? I'm sure they'd love a date night. And if you need a date night, feel free to drop your kids off here! :) (No really, I'm serious!) I think I'll set up a couple babysitting party nights for the summer and take our friends' kids for the night for them. Let me know if you want to drop your kids off at Camp Hicks. :)

RAK #19

Last week's RAK was to help out a friend or neighbor. I think I mentioned last week that my neighbor helped me finish this one while working on a painting project. Hopefully I didn't mess up their walls too bad! :)

How did you do??

This week's random act:

RAK#19: Tell someone you appreciate them. Let them know why. Be specific.

I got the sweetest email from a client/friend (I first met her when her family came to {cb}h for family photos but I would definitely consider her a sweet friend now). She just let me know I was appreciated and it really made my day. One of the perks of my job is that if clients think you do a good job, they let you know so by leaving a tip. That is always amazing but what makes my day even more is when they just email or call or send a note to let me know that what I do matters. I'm guessing their's someone in your life that would love to hear they matter too. Let's let them know this week! It can be an email, a text, a card, a phone call, whatever! Just tell someone you appreciate them and let them know why.

RAK #18

It's (past) time for another week of Random Acts of Kindness! Sorry I missed posting yesterday. It's been a little crazy around here but I'm back! Sort of. :)

Last week's RAK was to pick up the tab for someone. I have a fun story with how this one worked out for us. My sweet husband took our little family out for breakfast after church on Sunday for Mother's Day. I was telling him how the RAK of the week was to pick up someone's tab and maybe we could stop and get froyo or something to do the RAK (he actually ended up doing it at Perkin's because he's awesome but that's not the fun part of the story). So we are eating and out of no where (literally- she just appeared- I'm a people watcher and could describe every other person in our area that day and I have no idea where she came from) a nice little old mature lady appears at our table. She was seriously the sweetest thing and just wanted to stop by to say hello and to give us a leftover Perkins card to go towards our meal. It saved us quite a bit and then we used that money to complete the RAK for someone else. She was so sweet to us that I thought R might know her but he said he didn't and he thought maybe she just read my blog. Ha. Anyway. All that to say that in the middle of unexpected crazy, God just keeps showing up for us and we think that's awesome.

So how did you do??   :)

This week's random act:

RAK#18: Help a friend or neighbor with a project.

I'm kind of cheating this week and just using something that I just did today to get me off the hook for the week. I helped a neighbor paint (and now have the bug to start painting in my own house- watch out!). So this week's RAK is to help a friend/neighbor/coworker/random person with a project. Maybe it's painting or landscaping or moving something heavy or mowing or whatever. Just help them out!

RAK #17

It's time for another week of Random Acts of Kindness!

Last week's RAK was to do something nice for your spouse.  How did you do??

This week's random act:

RAK#17: Pick up the tab for another person.

I think this is one of my favorites. A local radio station always promotes this one during RAK week and I think it's so fun. So if you can, take care of the bill for a person in line behind you at the coffee shop, fast food drive thru, gas station, grocery store or even more fun- your favorite cupcake shop or frozen yogurt place!

Where are some places you could do this at?

My goal is to get 30 on board- would you join us??

Last week's RAK was to donate items after spring cleaning. I'm pretty sure people must think I'm dying with all the things I'm trying to pawn off on people that walk through our door. Are you in need or want of kitchen items, clothes, random house decor and a ton of other stuff? Feel free to come visit and see if there's anything you'd like. :) Once I've pawned as much as I can off on family and friends I'll be making that drop off to the local pantry for sure!

How did you do last week??  Do tell!

This week's random act:

RAK#15: Leave an outside toy (a ball, sidewalk chalk, bubbles?) at the park for a child to find.

For those of us in the midwest, it looks like spring might actually find us after all! Hopefully it will be warm enough to spend plenty of time outdoors soaking up the fresh air. While you are out and about, stop by a park and leave behind a surprise for a child to find (attach a note letting them know they can keep it).

What items can you think of that would be fun to find at a park?

RAK #13

It's time for another week of Random Acts of Kindness!

Huge shout out to all you awesome Hickstionarians doing the dare with me!
1. Molly 2. Lisa C. 3. Kelsey L. 4. Deanna 5. Haley 6. Erin G. 7. Jamie 8. Jessica G. 9. Mindy C. 10. Jess R. 11. Bethany 12. Kari S. 13. Mary S. 14. Ashley D. 15. Alison K. 16. Donna 17. Teri B. 18. Mal H. 19. Heidi 20. Elizabeth K. 21. Tab 22. Kerry 23. Jen E. 24. Amy 25. Julie O. 26. Mandy 27. YOU!

My goal is to get 30 on board- would you join us??

Last week's was commit to praying for someone all week (someone you don't normally have on your prayer list). I actually got a couple emails with prayer requests for friends of friends so that made it easy for me to add to my prayer list. I have an awesome group of friends that commit to praying for each other and our loved ones. I love that!

How did you do last week??  Do tell!

This week's random act:

Take a meal to someone.

We usually think about taking a meal to someone when they have a new baby or a death in the family but what about the rest of the time? A gift of a meal is a great gift ANY time! R and I were super blessed with help this last week following my surgery and one of the best things was having people bring us meals and treats. We appreciated it so much and it was so nice not to have to worry about what was for dinner. So this week let's bless someone with a meal (even if they don't have anything major going on at the moment- it can just be an unexpected treat!).

I'd love to hear how this goes for you or what your favorite go to delivery meals are. I've seen some good ones on Pinterest. I love the ones that include muffins so they can also eat them for breakfast the next day.

Please join us (even if you didn't jump in last week- you can either catch up or just start where we are)! Check out this post for more info.

RAK Challenge #12

It's time for another week of Random Acts of Kindness!

Huge shout out to all you awesome Hickstionarians doing the dare with me!
1. Molly 2. Lisa C. 3. Kelsey L. 4. Deanna 5. Haley 6. Erin G. 7. Jamie 8. Jessica G. 9. Mindy C. 10. Jess R. 11. Bethany 12. Kari S. 13. Mary S. 14. Ashley D. 15. Alison K. 16. Donna 17. Teri B. 18. Mal H. 19. Heidi 20. Elizabeth K. 21. Tab 22. Kerry 23. Jen E. 24. Amy 25. Julie O. 26. Mandy 27. YOU!

My goal is to get 30 on board- would you join us??

Last week's was to leave a surprise for a child. I put together some random Easter treats and had enough kids at our house within a matter of three days that they were all gone before I was able to take them to kids out of the house.

How did you do last week??  Do tell!

This week's random act:

Commit to praying for someone daily this week.

If all goes as planned, I'll be getting ready to leave the house for gallbladder surgery as this RAK random posts. I had to choose a RAK this week that wouldn't require me to be out and about much. I figure I should have plenty of time for this in the upcoming week. :)

My idea for this one actually came from a client that emailed to let me know they had been praying for me all week and would continue to do so. I have a lot of awesome friends that pray for me but it was cool to have someone I barely know let me know that they were praying for me (and specifically what they were praying). I automatically felt more peace after reading their prayers. I have a lot of friends/family on my prayer list (I use the notes app so I can easily update it) that I pray for daily (and I'm sure you do too) but this week let's think of someone we don't normally think to pray for and commit to praying for them daily for the week. Then let them know that you've been praying for them and will continue to do so (and ask them for specific requests). It's been my experience that everyone needs as much prayer as they can get and we aren't likely to turn it down. :)

I'd love to hear how this goes for you. You may not want to post details about this one here but if it's a fun story you can share, please email me!

happy mail!

Remember that challenge to send some happy mail last week (or so- my days are a bit mixed up lately)?

B was one of the lucky recipients of the dare!! His buddies Owen and Preston sent him some happy mail and we couldn't wait to see what was in it!

We got it open and found tons of awesome goodies inside. He went straight for the jelly beans (he is totally his daddy's boy). Once the candy was gone he was interested in checking out the rest of the goods. I couldn't believe how much awesomeness could fit inside one Easter egg! B loved it all and it kept him entertained all morning long. Thanks for the happy mail, J!!

Last week's challenge is in the books for us! R & I worked in the crawlers room at church. Fun to see R working with all the little babies. :)

How did you do last week??  Do tell!

This week's random act:

Leave a surprise for a child.

I was looking for something semi-easy to get done this with. With Easter this weekend I think it will be easy to put together a couple extra Easter treats and surprise some neighbor kids with them or maybe leave a dollar or two near the dollar toys at the store. I've also been seeing a lot of the 'You've been egg'ed' ideas and think that would be fun to do.

Do you have other ideas for this one? Please share with us if you do!!

Last week's challenge is in the books for us! B is helping me out with this one and sending some post cards from his vacation!

How did you do last week?? Did you stick something in the mail or did you do another RAK? Do tell!

This week's random act:

Volunteer Your Time.

There are so many places you can do this one! Think of something you enjoy spending your time doing and I'm sure there's a place you can volunteer to match your interest. Like working with kids? Volunteer in the church nursery, at a local school or at the boys & girls club. Enjoy sewing? Track down your local Family Consumer Sciences teacher and see if she can use an extra set of eyes/hands during the sewing unit (I LOVED those volunteers!). Nursing home residents enjoy visitors, Meals for the Heartland is always looking for groups to serve and if you live in my neck of the woods, this page updates often with LOTS of volunteering opportunities.

RAKing with the Hickstionary #7

It's time for another week of Random Acts of Kindness!

Huge shout out to all you awesome Hickstionarians doing the dare with me!
1. Molly 2. Lisa C. 3. Kelsey L. 4. Deanna 5. Haley 6. Erin G. 7. Jamie 8. Jessica G. 9. Mindy C. 10. Jess R. 11. Bethany 12. Kari S. 13. Mary S. 14. Ashley 15. Alison K. 16. Donna 17. Teri B. 18. Mal H. 19. Heidi

My goal is to get 30 on board- would you join us?? (And if I missed you on the list, will you PLEASE let me know? I feel like I'm forgetting someone!)

Last week's challenge is in the books for us. I wrote a little note and stuck in a Starbucks card. (Confession: I got the gift card from the Favorite Things party. I LOVE Starbucks and love to do a Starbucks splurge once in awhile but I had the card laying there as I grabbed the blank note card and decided to gift it on to someone else. Then I made my generic make at home version of Spiced Caramel Cider to hold me over.) :)

How did you do last week?? Did you stick a note in the baby section for a new mom? Did you add anything to the note? Were you sneaky about it? Did you stick around to watch and see if anyone grabbed it? Do tell! Leave a comment below. If you blogged about it, please share the link with us too!

RAK #7:

Leave an encouraging note and/or a treat (pack of gum, box of tea, candy bar) on someone's desk at work. (Because who wouldn't appreciate a pick me up in the middle of a work day!)

Try to be sneaky about it if you can so they don't know who it was from. If you work from home or don't have coworkers, consider leaving it on the desk of a place you visit (try to think of a place where you could be by the desk/counter without it being obvious you are leaving behind a treat- in our town we could do this at the bank, fitness center, library or even the post office). If that's not an option, put your spouse to work and have them take care of the drop off part for you.

Please join us (even if you didn't jump in last week- you can either catch up or just start where we are)! Check out this post for more info.

A Double Dog Dare

Last week was Random Acts of Kindness Week. Did you do any random acts?
We did some (five actually) but I found it hard to actually do them and real easy to come up with excuses not to.

I thought about letting the lady at Target in front of me in line but I knew no one would think anything of it if I didn't. I wanted to buy the cupcake for the nice girl behind me in line at Scratch but I thought she might think that was weird.

I thought about doing a lot more than I did. But I didn't.

Then I thought it might be easier and make me more bold to act if I had some accountability. I thought this little corner of the interweb could provide that accountability for me. So I decided to blog about it.

My plan started easy enough. I would start blogging about RAK once a week the 30 weeks leading up to my 30th birthday. I got my calendar out and started counting back thirty weeks to see when this adventure would begin. Imagine my surprise when I realized I would be turning 3-0 in just 25 weeks.

MY TWENTIES END IN TWENTY FIVE WEEKS!

Ahem.

So in an effort to join the masses and complete 30 random acts of kindness for my 30th birthday, I'm going to count five acts from last week and forge ahead completing the next 25 in the upcoming weeks.

That's one random act of a kindness a week for the next 25 weeks and I double dog dare you* to join me!

My plan is to post one idea a week and report back the following week. I'd love for you to join in the fun and report back with me. I'll even add an extra fun random (okay not so random) act at the end of the journey to one of you that completes each week with me!
I hope to come up with ideas that can be completed no matter where you live and on a very low budget so the commitment isn't unreasonable for all of us. If there's an act that isn't possible for you to complete, you can improvise or come up with your own idea.

So whose going to join me?? Please don't make me insert the cricket sound here...... :)

Just to round off my list of thirty, here are the five we completed last week:
1. Let the gentlemen at Subway go ahead of us in line.
2. Take lunch to the hubby at work (I'm going to include 'not so random' random acts in here for people that you know and love).
3. Deliver a treat to a neighbor (or in our case, neighbors, R's coworkers, and everyone else we saw on Valentine's day).
4. Reach out to someone you haven't talked to in awhile.
5. Did a free photo session (I've been randomly and not so randomly doing this since the Olivia Act was first posted. Fun! Exhausting, but fun.)  :)

And starting with the weekly challenge:

RAKing at the Hickstionary # Six:**

Leave a note in the baby section letting a new mom know she's doing okay. (Stick it to a pack of small diapers, perhaps?)

Optional: Include a favorite verse or a quote or poem about motherhood and/or include a little gift card or treat for her.

I dare you to join me! (Please!) :) Then report back next week and let me know how it went!
I cant wait to hear about how it goes! Feel free to ask your friends to join us. I'd love to have a bunch of us spreading the love!

So will you take the dare? Leave a comment below to let me know you're all in (pretty please?!?).  :)

*I didn't want to commit a breach of etiquette and skip right to the triple dog dare! ;)

**Feel free to jumpstart your own list by completing five acts of your own. Feel free to borrow from my list above or these recommended ones.
